Kitney Buses was a bus service that ran through Wouldham on the route between Burham and Rochester from the 1920s until 1932.
The company only had one bus, running from Burham church (the church has since been demolished) to Star Hill in Rochester. The bus took villagers to the shops and hospital in Rochester.
There was also special excursions such as trips to Margate, Ramsgate and to see hop-picking.
Kitney Buses was ran by two brothers, Cecil and David Kitney.
On the route through Wouldham, Kitney Buses had a rival bus, operated by Mr Sands. It is said that when the Kitneys saw Mr Sands' bus driving along Wouldham Road, they would drive as fast s they could along Burham Road (running above Wouldham) to beat him to the passengers.
Kitney Buses stopped running their service in 1932, selling the business to M&D. M&D offered both Cecil and David jobs as drivers where they worked for another 25 years. Cecil died in 1974, aged 74 and David lived on for another decade.
